WHY WE NEED YOUR HELP
Reading is the foundation of all education. More than 90% of public schools and more than 4.5 million learners in South Africa do not have a functioning school library. Since July 2009, Equal Education a movement of learners, parents, community members, educators and principals based in the Western Cape have campaigned for “One School, One Library, One Librarian” in all public schools.
On 22 September 2009, more that 3,000 learners mainly from schools across the Cape Peninsula particpated in an 8 kilometre “Walk for Libraries”. Learners from Khayelitsha were the majority of those who walked to demand the right to read.
60% of parents in Khayelitsha do not have work while the majority of workers in Khayelitsha service homes, restaurants, supermarkets, retail outlets and industry in the City of Cape Town. The Bible is the only book available at home to most learners. At school, the majority of Grade 1- 4 learners will have access to only one or two books for the whole year. Government action is fifteen years overdue and critical in this area.
We want to work with government to address the issue and to mobilise all the resources from citizens to the private sector to redress this historical apartheid injustice. Despite letters to the Minister of Education, marches and a petition of thousands of people there has been no response to Equal Education. A march to Parliament is now unavoidable.
On 21 March 2010, Equal Education will mobilise a mass “March to Parliament” and a concert in support of the “One School, One Library, One Librarian” Campaign. We need your time, your energy, your financial support and your voice in this campaign.
